10 reasons to love apples. With cold and flu season right around the corner we thought we would share these top 10 reasons to love apples.


We all know the old saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" and with the height of apple picking (and flu) season, we thought we would share 10 reason that we love apples.

1. They're super bone builders

Apples provide boron, an essential trace element that helps harden and strengthen bones. Cross fit junkies take note; because strong bones mean less stress fractures.

2. They help you breath

If you suffer from asthma, eating apples on a regular basis may offer protective benefits against asthma symptoms. In fact, the apples and asthma connection is so strong that pregnant women who eat apples even find that their unborn children will ultimately reap some of the positive effects on their lungs.

3. They keep you moving

FIBER. Yup, fiber! You know we just love our fiber around here and with a whopping 4 gram of the stuff in a medium sized apple this is a nice bonus. For some comparison thats as much as a WHOLE BOWL of bran cereal. With the average american fiber intake about 10 mg below recommended daily allowance of 25, apples are a super tasty way to get that extra dose.

4.  They keep your ticker ticking

Apples contain phenols, which have a double effect on cholesterol. It reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol, plain and simple.

5.  They make you skinny

Hello!!! With only 70 calories in a medium sized apple, plus the high fiber content, these little charmers will keep you in your skinny jeans. Why you might ask? Apples keep you feeling full longer and help control appetite.

6. They're great for your teeth

The juice of the apples has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria found on your teeth which cause decay, conveniently keeping you from all sorts of doctor's offices.

7. Their ability to manage diabetes

The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body, lowering the body's need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.

8. They have anti aging properties

What? Why aren't we all eating more apples? Apples have been found to play a role in inhibiting aging-related problems, preventing wrinkles and promoting hair growth. This is all due to to a compound named procyanidin B-2. (Yeah, we're nutrition nerds)

9. They reduce the risk of cancer

Not our favorite subject. Most of us love someone who struggles with this disease. A study published in 2008 suggested that those who eat one or more apples a day had less rick of oral cancer, cancer of the voice box, breast cancer, and colon, kidney and ovarian cancer as well. Share an apple with someone you love.

10. They're overall immune boosters

Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin. (again, nerd alert) Quercetin can boost your immune system especially when your body is stressed. Apples also contain lots of vitamin C which may help boost your immune system to ward off a variety of problems, including the common cold, by stimulating virus- and bacteria-fighting white blood cells known as neutrophils.

Bonus: They're best Organic

Apples have been found to be the most heavily pesticide-contaminated produce products according to The Environmental Working Group. The most common pesticides found on apples are Permethrin and DDT. Non organic apples are often waxed which is not digestible. Try to buy organic apples or if you cannot, wash them thoroughly before use preferably with a fruit and vegetable wash or peel them.
